Trinity blood drive

My name is Mallory Bond. I am a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and attended Trinity Lutheran School K-8. I am co-sponsoring the April 20 Community Blood drive with Trinity Lutheran Church and ask that you consider coming out to donate blood.

The Fall of 2002, I was in the 7th grade and so looking forward to being in Mr. G’s class, but I just never felt good. I was tired all the time, I was experiencing heart palpitations and leg cramps on a regular basis. I become pale in color. My grades began to decline and I just had absolutely no energy. As my symptoms continued to worsen, I was taken to the emergency room and diagnosed with anemia. I received 1 unit of blood. Looking for the source, I underwent extensive blood tests. During this time, my symptoms returned and I was again taken to the emergency room, where my hemoglobin was 5 (normal range 12-16). I was immediately transferred to the University of Missouri Hospital where I received 5 more units of blood. I had lost close to 43% of my blood supply. I was finally diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia in February 2003 and have stabilized my condition with medication.

People may not think that donating blood, even once, will make a difference, but it will. If there had been 6 less people that had thought that, I may not have received the immediate transfusions that I needed. Because of my critical need, my family and friends were not able to donate their own blood. It is the gracious donations of those that don’t know us who give us the “gift of life.” I now have become a blood donor and am proud to be co-sponsoring the Community Blood Center drive with Trinity Lutheran Church.

I hope to see each of you come out on April 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the youth room, at Trinity and support those who need us.

Tears Tell the Story

This Wednesday in our Lenten series, Pastor Rick Swanson will bring us a message about “Impossible Tears: Jesus Promises Grief Will Turn to Joy.” This week, meditation makes us slow way down and contemplate the depth of the disciples’ fears, wonder, and grief as Jesus tells them of his quickly approaching death. Compared to a mother’s labor pains, each of the disciples “labor” through their grief only slowly, one by one, coming to realize the great joy of our Lord’s resurrection from the dead. Please plan to be with us in preparation for Easter!

Tears Tell the Story

This Wednesday in our Lenten series, Pastor David Mueller will bring us a message about “A Bowl of Tears: Jesus Reveals His Betrayer.” This week, it’s the tears, the great sorrow, and the distress of the disciples as they hear Jesus say, “One of you will betray me.” Which is worse? The grief over being told Jesus is going to die, or the fact that his death would be set in motion by one of them betraying their Lord? Please plan to be with us in preparation for Easter!

ChristCare Group Leader Training Update

It has really been a joy to be a part of the group that is training to be ChristCare Group Leaders. We started in October and are meeting every Wednesday night except during Advent and Lent. We will complete the initial training by the middle of April.

We have all had to work very hard to keep up with the reading and other “homework assignments”. Everyone is participating fully in the classroom discussions and we are all learning and growing together. After the initial training is complete we will have monthly meetings for continuing education and feedback.

There are 11 people in the group. I have led the sessions, but I must admit that I have learned more from the people in the group than from the book. Gary Sonnenberg has led the weekly Bible Studies and Pastor Alter has joined the group after confirmation class is done. Others in the group are Elizabeth Beach, Bernice Decker, Roger Engelby, Shelley Glover, Dean Hopkins, David Lieb, Margaret Meisel, and Walt Timm.

Please think about becoming a member of a ChristCare Group when we start the groups in the last half of April. We will be sending out a survey to everyone in the congregation to ask about your interest and hope we get many responses. You will be hearing a lot more about ChristCare in the months ahead. Of course you are welcome to ask anyone in the group for more information.

Jan Sonnenberg

Save your postage stamps for China

As our team prepares to go to Macau and Jiangmen, we are told that the Chinese really appreciate postage stamps. They collect and trade them. You can help by cutting out stamps, especially commemorative ones at Christmas time, and even plain ones, and placing them in a box for that purpose in the narthex from now through the end of January. Please cut them out with an 1/8-1/4 inch border around them. If two or three stamps are on an envelope together, cut them out as a block. Thanks for helping make this inexpensive, but really appreciated gift possible.

China, here we come!

“Two of my brothers and I will be going along with a group of 8 others, mostly from Webster Gardens Lutheran Church, on a mission trip to Macau and Jiangmen from the 2nd–13th of March 2008. The purpose of the trip will be to help those who are learning English as a foreign language. In the process, we pray that the Lord will open doors for us to bring Jesus to them. Please pray for us and our families as we prepare to go. Also, please pray for those whom we will meet that the opportunities will be plentiful to share the Good News of Jesus.” —Pastor Lange
